SWARAMAYEE GURUKUL

Gurukul Inauguration

Swaramayee Gurukul has been a dream project of Dr. Prabha Atrre. Swaramayee plans to nurture talented students into professionals who aspire to take music as a career, by providing training aided by a small auditorium, library of audio-video cassettes and books, facility for audio video recording etc. The mini auditorium is meant for mehfils, seminars, workshops, discussion meetings, press conferences, etc.

Swaramayee Gurukul aims to strive to bridge the prevailing gap between the academic institutions and the traditional guru-shishya paramparaa. The institution is an endeavour to fulfill socio-cultural commitments.

Swaramayee Gurukul was started under the aegis of 'Dr. Prabha Atre Foundation' in Pune, as a major step to fulfill one of the objectives of the Foundation. The Gurukul was inaugurated on 15th April 2003 by the Hindustani classical music maestro Pt. Bhimsen Joshi. On this occasion 'Chupaa chupi' a book of poems in Marathi for children by Smt. Indira Atre was released on the eve of her being in 90th year by noted poet Shri. Gangadhar Mahambre. The auspicious, joyous occasion was marked by a concert by Ustad Rashid Khan.

Pt. Bhimsen Joshi

Dr. Atrre spent her formative years in Pune where she was born, brought up and educated. Her attachment to the place made her choose Pune for her dream project.

Swaramayee Gurukul besides imparting training in performance is to hold monthly traditional bhaitaks as one of its important activity supplemented by lecture-demonstrations, seminars, workshops, etc.

In its two years of functioning Gurukul has made a modest beginning in that –

  1. Nearly 25 talented students from all over India aspiring to be professional musicians have been receiving music training.
  2. 4 foreign national students who are professionals in their respective fields are receiving training in the Hindustani classical style.
  3. Monthly baithaks: Gurukul has organized 25 monthly baithaks in its mini auditorium at its premises during the last two years. The objective of baithaks is to rejuvenate the culture of the Bharatiya mehfils. In a live concert of Indian classical music, the presence of an initiated listener who is conversant with the concepts, material, technique and end structures, makes a lot of difference even at the level of entertainment. These programmes are not ticketed and are open to all music-lovers.
  4. Library of Books and Audio Recordings: a small library of books and audio recordings has been set up. The facilities are open to the music loving public also.
  5. Music classes: started Hindustani classical vocal music, tabla and harmonium classes for beginners.
  6. Dance classes: started Kathak dance classes for beginners.
  7. Communication Skills and Personality Development classes: to help grow the overall talent of students of Gurukul also of public of Pune and around.

Indian art music has no written music. It has extempore structuring having unlimited potential for the development/projection of raag. It is in the area of entertainment that the listener takes part in the creation of music indirectly. In a live concert of Indian classical music, the presence of an initiated listener who is conversant with the concepts, material, technique and end structures, makes a lot of difference even at the level of entertainment.

The baithak series is informal in nature trying to establish a rapport between the audience and the performer. The concert has the artist himself giving an introduction to his art, his formative years of training, the bandish (composition), his thought / approach to the raag structure, etc., At the end of the concert is held a dialogue / interaction session between the audience and the performer.
The baithaks are organized by the students in terms of making arrangements for publicity, stage, sound, reception, presentation, hospitality, etc., All these activities give a good exposure to a learner who wishes to mould himself in all aspects of performance.
The bhaitaks have been attended by academicians, musicians, connoisseurs, music critics and lay listeners. The programmes have been well received and covered by the media.

The 1st bhaitak in the series was held on 15th April 2003, the day of inauguration of the Swaramayee Gurukul. Ustad Rashid Khan performed on the joyous occasion accompanied by Bharat Kamath and Suyog Kundalkar. The concert was attended by over 500 people from Pune and around.
